What are the difference between Mother of Pearl Buttons and Trocas Shell Buttons ?
Last Updated: 2017-03-16
Basically, Mother of Pearl and Trocas Shell are two different species of shell from the ocean. The most obvious difference between them is the degree of whiteness of the shell - in general, MOP is whiter and Trocas is more yellowish. Structurally speaking, MOP is stronger than Trocas, this is because of the internal packing of the building units inside the shell if we can see them microscopically.
There are various thickness of MOP and Trocas Shell Buttons we offer on our site - normal thickness, 2mm, 3mm, 4mm and even 5mm are possible. The thicker the buttons, the harder to find the raw material and the higher the cost. For high end men's shirts, some customers would match them with thicker buttons, the origin of this is believed to origin from Europe at least 10 years ago.
For high end shell buttons, where most customers would pay a premium to have buttons with the bottom side grinded and polished just like the face side, this manufacturing process produce genuine high grade shell buttons, however, not all shell buttons can be processed to the same degree of quality demanded by customers, this is because the shell raw materials vary in quality from lots to lots, from season to season, depending on the biological habitats of the ocean under which the shell organisms are flourished. Bad sea environment produces bad quality of shell, too frequent harvest from the sea lower the quality of the shell as it takes time for the shell to mature enough to show good quality.
